The world of pocket knives appeals to enthusiasts of well-crafted, useful objects steeped in history.
Beyond their everyday usefulness, many people enjoy collecting knives.

From the iconic knife that everyone must have, to the luxurious knife with a Damascus blade and handle made from rare, finely crafted materials that becomes an opus of art, from the inexpensive knife received as a gift as a child to the priceless gift, exclusive Damascus editions, souvenirs of a special occasion, each knife can become the first in a collection.

It is this world of knives as collector’s items that we invite you to explore here; browse through our comments and advice to start an elegant and well-curated collection.

What is a ‘collector’ pocket knife?

When talking  about collections, it’s not (only) talking about prices.

A pocket knife becomes a collector’s item when it transcends its simple functional use to become a testament to craftsmanship, history, or rarity.

Several criteria set it apart:

  • Rarity/limited edition: a high-quality knife model produced in very limited quantities gains prestige (and price!).
  • Craftsmanship/signature: a unique piece or one signed by a master cutler adds a heritage dimension to the knife.
  • History/provenance: a knife that belonged to a particular period, a well-known collector, or that comes with a certificate of authenticity.
  • Materials, colors: handcrafted damascus blades or a specific stainless steel Damascus blade design, handles made from rare materials or wood/materials of all types, or variations of the same wood/materials, knife lines based around the same color, etc.
  • Techniques: knife closure system, handcrafted damascus steel blade or stainless steel damascus blade, chiselling, pittings…
  • Design and aesthetics: iconic knife model of a brand or era, balanced proportions, smooth mechanics, meticulous finishes.

Even a knife model from a so-called “standard” range, at a low price, can, over time and depending on the finish, become sought after by collectors.

Collector knife families

Each collector has their own approach.
Here are a few that we have identified among our customers:

  1. Regional/local knives—such as Le Thiers, Le Laguiole, and L’Opinel models—which embody local expertise and history.
  2. Antique military or hunting knives — steeped in history, often sought after for their authenticity.
  3. Contemporary designer knives — small, innovative workshops that play with design, materials, mechanics, and precise damascus steel designs.
  4. Limited editions/special pieces—exclusive or numbered models that are likely to become prestigious items in the long term.
  5. Entry-level heritage pieces — even modest models can be part of a collection if they are carefully preserved.

The advantage of diversifying—small knives, folding knives, decorated knives, simple knives, low-priced knives, special editions—is that it gives a collection consistency and richness.

Collecting at any cost:
passion above all else

One of the strengths of the world of collector knives is that it is not reserved solely for those with large budgets. The appeal of a knife lies not only in its price, but also in its quality, history, and finish—regardless of how much one can afford to pay for it.
Anyone can collect: a beautiful small knife model, a special limited edition, an engraved copy, a numbered knife model, etc.

Price is not a limiting factor; inexpensive knives can also be the starting point for a wonderful collection. Each handcrafted pocket knife can be considered a work of art and heritage, worthy of inclusion in a collection, and an industrial pocket knife can become a sought-after collector’s item over time.
Exceptional, high-priced models—Damascus blades, hand-finished, rare materials—are naturally sought-after items, but the key is to stick to a guideline, maintain consistency in your choices, and prioritize quality over price from the outset.

The pleasure lies above all in discovering the knife, the history and emotion it conveys, and the coherence of the collection, not just in the price of each knife.

Why the value of a knife
increases over time

The gradual increase in value of a collector’s knife depends on several factors:

  • Increased rarity with discontinuation: when a knife model is no longer produced, it becomes more valuable.
  • Good condition/originality: knife box and/or certificate preserved, no repairs, controlled patina, etc.
  • Signature, engraving, documented provenance: an identified knife (with invoice, certificate, engraving) increases in value.
  • Materials: Damascus steel, rare wood handles, precious metals and/or materials.
  • The market’s “favorite”: certain pieces become sought-after icons.
  • The value of the knife within the collection: sometimes a knife of little value can add a lot to the collection as a whole.

But be careful, the value of a knife (and therefore the price at which you could potentially resell it) does not automatically increase for all models. A poorly maintained knife, poor-quality damascus steel, a modified pocket knife, or a knife with a standard finish is less likely to increase in value over time.

It is essential to take the right steps: store away from moisture, oil the blade regularly, and maintain the original spring. Proper maintenance and storage will also help preserve the value of your collection.

Tips for starting
a stylish collection

Here are some suggestions for building a coherent and sustainable collection:

  1. Choose a focus or theme: a brand, a period, a material, a style, a type of design, a region, etc.
  2. Do your research: specialized books, cutlery fairs, forums, cutlery museums, collector gatherings, etc.
  3. Verify authenticity: signature, engraving, hallmark, certificate, invoice, etc.
  4. Condition of the knife: originality is preferred—no modifications, no overly invasive restoration…
  5. Carefully maintain: light oil, gentle cleaning, store in a dry place away from UV rays and temperature fluctuations.
  6. Display items properly, especially luxury items, high-priced items, and very high-priced items: display case with controlled humidity, rustproof support, indirect lighting, etc.
  7. Document each knife: description, photo, origin, date of purchase, price, etc. Create a “collection book” to keep track of and give substance to your collection. A collection book will also be useful to justify possession of a knife in the event of an inspection outside your home.

The legal framework in France:
owning, carrying, or wearing a pocket knife

French law clearly distinguishes between possession, transport, and carrying of knives.

Possession of a collector’s knife is completely legal. You can keep as many models as you wish at home, in a display case, or in a collection.

However, there are restrictions on transporting (carrying a knife in a bag or vehicle) and carrying (carrying it on your person).

Automatic or double-edged models may be classified as category D (bladed weapons) under French law. Carrying them without a legitimate reason is generally prohibited.

It is therefore necessary to justify the use: collection, exhibition, demonstration, professional use, etc.

If you are or wish to become a collector, it is therefore recommended that you keep invoices, certificates, or original documents to prove the legitimacy of your ownership of the knives during transport. It is therefore a good idea to keep a collection logbook.

Similarly, it is best to transport knives with the blade closed, in a case.
