One city, one brotherhood : Origins of Le Thiers knife
Initiated in 1993, it has set itself the goal of promoting LE THIERS® knife in order to highlight the history and the cutlery industry, so dear to the hearts of its inhabitants.
The pattern is registered with the INPI (National Institute of Industrial Property) and is owned by this brotherhood.
Before being able to launch any production, each cutler must present a prototype its LE THIERS® knife adaptation, to the Conseil de Jurande (consulting guild). This guild, created especially to care LE THIERS® knife specificities and values, is the only one who can authorize the sell of one new version of this knife.
LE THIERS® knife proudly bears the name of its hometown, which has become, over time, the French capital and world capital of cutlery.
The knife is the emblem of the city and cutlery industry, in all its facets, attracts many cutlers and craftsmen in the basin of Thiers. The common passion for knives makes today live almost 150 companies.


Values and particularities of Le Thiers knife : A Jurande to protect the knife
Cutler and knife must respect several quality rules that make this knife a high-end knife.
In order to maintain authenticity and territoriality, all pieces must come and manufacturing steps must be done in Thiers basin. Traceability is also an essential element for knives production and selling in order to ensure their compliance.
To be able to profit from LE THIERS® name, cutlers have precise specifications to respect. The objective is to be able to guarantee to the consumers a quality product, manufactured according to the requirements fixed by the brotherhood who created it.
To recognize a LE THIERS® knife, here are the particularities to pay attention:
- general shape of the knife which is slightly curved. The original version is recognizable by all thanks to its double wave and its handle cut in inverted slopes.
It is possible to adapt this shape in order to propose its own interpretation, while respecting, of course, the requested specifications. - Blade etching/marking with mention LE THIERS® followed with par + cutler’s name.
- and, the “T.” punch , representing the French trademark, that must also be present on the knife.
