Year-End Gifts for Employees: An Original Gift Idea—a Personalized Knife

Every year, the same scenario plays out in HR and marketing departments: November rolls around, and it’s time to come up with ideas for “end-of-year gifts” for employees.
The budget is set, and the deadline is tight.
Promotional product catalogs then showcase their tried-and-true classics: personalized mugs, branded pens, cotton tote bags, notebooks made from recycled paper, gourmet gift boxes, and gift cards. These are all proven products that serve their purpose.
There’s one question that few companies ask themselves when placing an order: Which of these gifts will your employees still have in their hands five years from now?
This is precisely where the personalized knife stands out.
At GOYON-CHAZEAU, an artisanal cutlery workshop based in La Monnerie-le-Montel, in the Thiers region (capital city for French cutlery), we produce engraved collections every year-end for companies seeking a durable gift—made in France and truly customizable.
Here’s how to make a lasting impression on your employees.
Why Year-end gifts for employees are no longer just a small gesture
Christmas gifts for employees have long been treated as a year-end budget item. They have become a statement.
In a tight job market, what you place on your employees’ desks in December says something about your company: the care taken in selecting the gift, the budget allocated, and, above all, the values the gift conveys.
Three factors have come into play in recent years:
- Recognition
A gift given identically to 200 people is perceived as a collective gesture. An item chosen and engraved with a person’s first name is perceived as a personal gesture. They convey different messages. - Image and Values
A company that emphasizes “Made in France,” its environmental impact, or its CSR policy stands to benefit if its year-end gift reinforces this message rather than sidelining it. - LifespanA gift used every day keeps the message alive well beyond the month of December.
In other words, year-end gifts have become a full-fledged employer branding tool in their own right.
The five criteria for a successful holiday gift
Before comparing products, it’s helpful to define what you’re looking for in a gift.
Based on the requests we receive from companies every fall, five criteria consistently come up.
- Real-world usefulness
The gift should fit into the employee’s daily life, both at home and at the office.
A useful item is an item that gets kept. - Lifespan
This is the criterion that most clearly distinguishes one gift idea from another.
Some products are designed to be used up, while others are meant to accompany their owners for years. - The degree of customization
Many promotional items are personalized with the company logo. Few are personalized with the recipient’s first name.
Yet that’s what creates the “this gift is for me” effect. - Alignment with your values
Origin, materials, manufacturing process, environmental footprint: the gift should be explainable in two sentences without contradicting your CSR message. - The unboxing experience
The joy of unwrapping matters. A beautiful box, a material you want to touch, an engraving you discover—it’s that moment that teams remember.
Most corporate gifts check two or three of these boxes, which is already quite good for a limited budget.
The advantage of a personalized knife is that it checks all five.

A personalized knife: an original gift idea that checks all the boxes
Quality knives hold a special place among corporate gifts.
They are everyday items that can be passed down through generations, embodying craftsmanship, and are unexpected enough in December to create a genuine surprise when the gift box is opened.
A useful item that lasts
A pocket knife accompanies its owner for decades.
A forged table knife becomes part of a family set.
A well-sharpened paring knife becomes your go-to tool in the kitchen.
A knife has no expiration date: it can be sharpened, maintained, and repaired. It’s a product made to last, not to be replaced.
Made in France, in Thiers
Thiers has been the French capital of cutlery for more than seven centuries. Our workshop there crafts all of its knives and cutlery using exclusive materials sourced locally through short supply chains, in collaboration with local partners in the industry.
GOYON-CHAZEAU was awarded the Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant (EPV – Living Heritage company) designation in 2013 and 2018, a government distinction recognizing its mastery of forging, stainless steel welding, and hollow handle construction—a skill that very few French companies still possess.
For a company that champions “Made in France,” the connection is clear: the gift is no longer just a statement—it becomes a tangible demonstration of that commitment. Your employees leave with an item they can talk about.
An Eco-Friendly Gift Through Sustainability
Many corporate gifts highlight the use of recycled materials. This is a useful approach.
There is another, complementary approach: produce less, produce well, and produce locally.
Our handles are made from materials chosen for their longevity: fine woods, horn, or technical materials such as Paperstone® (compressed recycled paper) and Evergreen®. The blades are made of hardened stainless steel, selected for its resistance to oxidation and its cutting ability.
Nothing is designed to be thrown away. The environmental impact of an object kept for twenty years is nothing like that of one kept for twenty days.

Customization that truly reflects the person
This is where the knife stands out from the rest of the corporate gift lineup. Laser engraving allows for personalization on two levels:
- The corporate level—your logo, your name, an anniversary date, or a group message, engraved on the blade, the handle, or the gift box.
- The individual level—the employee’s first name, initials, or the year they joined the company.
Combining these two elements completely transforms how the gift is perceived. A knife engraved with “Camille” on one side and the company logo on the other becomes a one-of-a-kind item that belongs to a specific person.
For larger orders, engraving just the logo on the product and adding a name on the gift box or card allows you to maintain that personalized touch without complicating the production process.
We also create custom knives based on our existing models: choice of handle material in colors matching your brand guidelines, color coordination, and assembly of custom gift boxes.
Customers and partners: the same logic applies
What applies to employees also applies to corporate gifts.
A knife forged in France, engraved with your logo, and sent to your best customers or partners will remain on their desk or in their pocket long after the year is over. Hotels and restaurants have, in fact, been using this principle for a long time with our gift sets, so that their guests can take home a piece of the experience they had at their establishment.
Which Knife to Choose Based on Your Employees and Your Budget
The choice depends on three factors: your teams’ profiles, the budget per person, and the quantity.
Here are the four most popular categories for year-end gifts.

How to create a budget per employee
The question of price always comes up first in these discussions, and that’s only natural: the cost of a year-end gift multiplies by the number of employees.
There are three guidelines to help you make the right decision.
Think in terms of cost per year of use, not purchase price.
A €25/ 25$ item replaced every year and a personalized knife kept for fifteen years aren’t comparable on the same scale. When you factor in the lifespan, the latter is often the more economical choice—and it’s also the only one your employees will remember where it came from.
Account for three cost categories, not just one.
The product itself, the personalization (logo engraving, name engraving, box branding), and then packaging and shipping.
Individual engraving requires a bit more preparation than mass logo engraving: factor this in during the initial quote, not later on.
Break it down if your overall budget is limited.
Many companies combine two tiers: an engraved pocket knife for all employees, and a set of knives or cutlery for service anniversaries, farewells, or teams you wish to recognize. The whole package remains consistent since all products come from the same workshop.
Terms vary depending on your needs: let us know your headcount and your budget per person, and we’ll build a proposal based on that.
Making the Operation a Success: Reverse Scheduling and Shipping
A personalized gift isn’t a last-minute online purchase. Production quantities, packaging, engraving—everything requires planning.
Here is the timeline we recommend for distribution before the holidays:
- 10 weeks before the event — Define requirements: number of recipients, budget per person, desired level of personalization. Request a quote.
- 8 weeks before the event — select the product and handle material, and submit the logo as a black-and-white vector file (no grayscale). Approve the engraving artwork.
- 6 weeks before the event — place the firm order and submit the list of names if individual engraving is required.
- 3 weeks before the event — production, engraving, and preparation of gift boxes in the workshop.
- 2 weeks before the event — shipping.
Regarding shipping, there are two options depending on your organization’s setup.
Bulk delivery to headquarters remains the simplest and most cost-effective option when the items are distributed during an internal event or a year-end party.
Individual shipping to home addresses is necessary when teams are spread out or working remotely: in this case, make sure to collect addresses early in the process, as this is almost always the step that delays the project. Also, set aside an additional budget for shipping.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does giving a knife as a gift bring bad luck?
According to superstition, giving a knife as a gift “cuts off friendship and severs ties.” Tradition has provided an antidote for centuries: the recipient gives a symbolic coin, and the knife becomes a purchase rather than a gift. Slip a coin into the box along with a note explaining this: the story always makes an impression, and it turns the gift-giving moment into a little moment of camaraderie.
Can we engrave both the company logo and the employee’s first name?
Yes. Laser engraving allows for multiple markings on a single item—for example, the logo on the handle or the gift box and the first name on the blade.
The final result and possible locations depend on the model and material chosen: we always approve a proof before production begins.
What is the turnaround time for a customized order?
Allow several weeks between approval of the engraving proof and shipment, depending on the order volume and the time of year.
In November and December, workshop schedules fill up quickly: the earlier you place your order, the wider the selection of models and materials available.
Is there a minimum order quantity?
We handle both small runs for a small team and larger volumes. Customization terms vary depending on the quantity: it’s best to let us know your headcount and budget so we can provide a tailored proposal.
