Understand better to buy better
As brave cutlers as we are, the first answer we give to this question is that a knife is a sharp utensil used to cut.

Why do you need a knife ? FOR CUTTING!

This is the primary function of the knife, the one that comes from flint.

But there are so many knives on the market that do not cut!

Some just because it’s not their vocation (butter knife, spreader, fish knife …), others just because they are of poor quality for use.
And yet they are all called knives …

Why ?

For the shape : a blade with a handle, it is a knife. And never mind if it does not really cut … The consumer will not see the difference!?

Mr. & Mrs Eatwithfingers maybe…
But it is certain that kitchen and table professionals and amateurs are not fooled. They see the knife as a tool.

There are many purists who do not like to talk about the knife as a tool. And yet …

Have you ever tinkered with entry-level tools then had the pleasure of using high-end tools from a friend who came to help you?
The time saved, the efficiency in the action, the quality of the work done and its duration over time…
Incomparable isnt’it ?

Well, it’s the same with a knife.

You will almost always reach your goals with a lambda knife. But working with a high-end knife, specially designed for a specific use, will bring you ease in the gestures, speed in the cut and a more regular and nicer result.

A good knife meets the needs of its owner

This does not prevent us from joining these purists, also considering the knife as an object, beautiful to look at and show. Sometimes even so beautiful that it becomes an art object.

Often bearer of meaning and tradition, it tells a men story, a know-how, techniques transmitted throughout the ages.
It imposes a style, sets the tone for a table, characterizes the personality of its owner.

So… ???
Will you continue to buy a knife without looking it in the details?

If your answer is « no », we swear that, in our next post on the topic, we will give you some tips for choosing a good knife!
