In the same way that you do not wash a coton t-shirt like a silk shirt or a wool sweater, you may not wash your everyday dishes like your crystal glasses, your wedding porcelain or your handmade knives and cutlery.

Washing your knives into the dishwasher, is it a good idea?

Possible… But not for all articles

Indeed, humidity, heat and chemicals always weaken, more or less, your tableware and kitchen articles.

Cracks, stains, whitening… are signs that show, often too late, that your dishes would have preferred to be washed by hand.

We can only advise you to handwash articles that are dear to you with a soft sponge and quickly wipe them.
It is the best way to keep their shine and your knives’ cutting edge.

To speak more closely about knives and cutlery here are some advices :

  • Rince your knives ans cutlery if you do not wash them quickly so that food acidity will not oxyde the steel.
  • Do not leave in prolonged contact with water or a heat source in order to keep the stainless feature of steel and prevent water from infiltrating and do play the assembly parts.

These materials can be washed in the dishwasher. We nethertheless recommend to set the temperature to 55°C maximum.

Full stainless steel knives and cutlery pieces or with composite handle

Strong materials like Paperstone®, carbon fiber, stabilised wood

  • Place the knives with blades turned to the bottom in order to protect the cutting edge as possible.
  • Use a conventional powder detergent without adding regenerating salt or rinsing liquid as they are corrosive.
  • Do not wash with other metals such as iron, silver or gold, this to avoid any electrolysis phenomenom thant can stain your articles.
  • Wipe as soon as washing is completed to limit oxidation risks.
  • Store in a dry place.

Acrylic handle knives and cutlery pieces

A material that allows some machine washes

Acrylic is a plastic that must be shaped to realise the handles.

Because it is a plastic, it is dishwasher safe.
However, it will lose its brightness and be deteriorate if machine washed too often.

We therefore advise you to wash by hand items with acrylic handles, as much as possible.

Materials to handwash Imperatively

Wooden and horn handle knives and cutlery pieces

  • These materials are very fragile. They imperatively must be handwashed with a soft sponge.
  • Avoid any immersion; prolonged contact with water or liquid will damage the material.
  • Occasionally wipe handles with linseed oil to give them back a little shine and protect them.

Handwash your knives and cutlery pieces with wooden handles.

Particular case of juniper wood

Juniper wood can ooze. This can make the handle a bit sticky.

You can solve the problem by wiping the handle with a rag soaked in a little with nail remover or a multi-purpose stain remover adapted to wood.

OUPS !

You knew all that but… One of your knives or cutlery has been washed into the dishwasher…

The knife presents some stains on the stainless steel ?

The reason might be a limestone water, or washing products you used.
You can try to erase the stains,

  • by wiping them with a sotf cloth humidified with some drops of white vinegar or lemon juice diluted in boiling water.
  • by erasing them with a white eraser.
